I have a growing population of African American students. In addition to this I have students in which their parents are undocumented immigrants. The students needs books about topics that they face in their lives. They also need books that are written by African American and other diverse authors. The authors can act as role models for the students to show that reading and writing is important. Those books can then be resources for the students to deal with their experiences. The books will provide the students with an outlet and guidance when dealing with their everyday lives. The books can show them how to celebrate their cultural backgrounds and grow as a student in the process. Many of the students will stop reading because it doesn't pertain to their world. These books will give them choice in their learning. The reading will help to foster discussions around certain topics and reinforce the lessons presented in class. It will give the students the opportunity to apply what they have learned to their own independent reading. This will have a domino effect and improve their comprehension and analytical thinking. The students will feel more comfortable to share their ideas if they are sitting in a cafe style setting. The bean bags and and cube stretch limo will create a setting that will promote the discussion and/or give them a place to quietly read.
