Where does silk come from? What do we use it for? How is it made? Some students' responses on their KWL charts: "it from spidrs" and "whats silk" Background knowledge of students in low-income areas with multiple disabilities, mismatched instructional levels and grade levels is alarming. For our STEM fair project, my students will be rearing, caring for and observing silkworms from the eggs to the larva to the pupa to the moth, and documenting their journeys on the iPads. They will be making daily diary entries and taking photos/videos to ultimately make an iMovie, Power Point or word document about their experience. Due to the population of students I work with, emotional disturbance students have regular and intense episodes to express themselves in challenging and overwhelming situations. These crises frequently lead to the destruction of school property. This, coupled with theft issues within our school, as a result of their impoverished socio-economic situations, makes it a necessity to ensure the safety and security of the expensive new iPads our school has acquired, prior to the authorization of student access. Without students gaining access to the iPads, our STEM project and the students' educational journey exploring science (through the silkworms' lifecycle and its' production of silk), technology (creating time lapse videos, capture images, compose iMovies and Power Points), and math (solve word problems to calculate how many leaves per worm to pick on each of our field trips) will cease to exist. Help these students access a devise that will unlock their power of learning.
