Reading is the key to success in school. It is known that the more students read, the more they are exposed to different and higher-level vocabulary. Independent reading helps to build their reading stamina, use their imagination, and build on many other skills that they will use in the classroom. They can use these skills in ELA, social studies, science, and even math. However, as teachers, we find that some of our students just aren't reading enough outside of school. If you don't like reading, you just haven't found the right book for you. I firmly believe that. My goal is for all of my students to leave my room loving to read, and knowing what it is they like to read. This comes with trying many, many different books to figure that out. I'd love to provide my students with the resources necessary to go through that process and come out the other side loving to read. My goal is to start stocking my classroom bookshelves with the Sunshine State Books from the 2017-2018 and the 2018-2019 year. This will give the students plenty of options to start or continue their relationship with reading. Students will be able to check these books out of the classroom to read at home, or use them in class when they have finished an assignment early and have some free time.
