Our artists will be creating abstract self portraits inspired by Tad Carpenter's cover art for the book, Wonder. They will use the kwik sticks and neon tempera cakes and spend a few days exploring different techniques with these new materials offered to them. After they explore the various art materials, they will choose one material/technique to create their abstract self-portrait inspired by the cover art for the book titled, Wonder. The materials that are requested in this project will provide my students with a choice when deciding on what materials/techniques they will select when creating their own self-portrait. This lesson is also a collaboration between the classroom teachers and the Art classroom. The students are reading the book, Wonder, in their classroom and this collaboration will tie in character education, kindness, creativity, self- portraiture, correct proportions of the human face, and abstract vs. realistic Art.
