Our 5th - 8th graders will read the true story of a boy in Africa who taught himself to build a windmill. We will study the character strengths that propel a boy who does not have enough money to go to school, to instead, pursue reading science books on his own. Then my students will use the Kinex renewable windmill sets to build their own windmills. Taking it a step further, we will do a community study as to what they think our neighborhood's biggest needs are and go from there on our next steps to improve our neighborhood. Maybe we will build something too.
