I teach in a 7th grade Language Arts classroom in Waverly, Nebraska. I teach reading, writing, and how to be a great person! One really positive way to get students to read is to give them ownership over book choice. I would love to be able to set up literature circles in my classroom. One thing they do now is read short stories and articles to help them grow in comprehension and vocabulary. With writing, I like to add projects that stem from the reading. For example, the students will write a letter to a character or an author. Another thing students do is writing about topics they enjoy and know a lot about. Expanding their minds beyond this is a great way to scaffold their learning. The students learn to be great people through their reading, writing, discussions, and activities that they do in class. I think kindness and respect are paramount for all students to see and learn.
