Inquiry-based experiments engage students in learning while requiring them to use communication skills that will prepare them for the work force. I have 2 periods of 5th grade science and 3 period of 6th grade science. I teach in a low-income community. Many of the parents and caregivers are blue-collared worker, farmers, or on social security. Over 75% of our students receive free and reduced lunches. I have a variety of cultures including African Americans (about 25%), Caucasians (about 60%), and Hispanics (about 15%). Approximately 10-12% of my students have been identified with learning disabilities. They are integrated into my regular Science classes. I have several students on medication for ADHD or ADD. A hands-on science program is necessary for me to offer differentiated instruction for all of my students. Hands-on activities allow students to learn at their own pace and level, while engaging all students.
