As leaders of the 21st Century we, as educators, are responsible for preparing these leaders to be able to use a variety of tools, not just pencil and paper, to engage in their world and manipulate information. The use of math manipulatives and games help students sharpen their mathematical thinking skills. The effective use of manipulatives and games can help students connect ideas and integrate their knowledge so that they gain a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. This will also allow the teacher to create a Guided Math Classroom, where students can experience centers that include games and manipulatives alone with their worksheets. There's no substitute for firsthand, hands-on experience. Manipulatives give students ways to construct physical models of abstract mathematical ideas. Manipulatives intrigue and motivate while helping students learn.
