My students are smart but they have been branded as "not a math person" since their elementary school days so they hate math. I teach Math Essentials to HS Seniors. I have created a remedial math curriculum where: 1) they reteach themselves mathematical principles they learned since kindergarten using Khan Academy. 2) Service learning is key. They will be going to a 1st grade classroom to tutor students in math and read to them using fictional math related books. 3) they will learn how math can be fun and is all around us. They will be learning how math intersects with cooking, music, construction, cars, rockets, money and many more topics. The math books will be used by my HS Seniors as the read to and teach 1st graders how and why math is fun. The drone will be used as a fun tool to get the 1st and 12th graders attention. The other items will be used to teach my students how math is all around us.
