This year, in addition to teaching art, the students at my school come see me an extra day every other week for STEAM (STEM + the Arts) projects or to work with Technology. So far this year, kindergarten through third grade have worked with Legos and fourth and fifth grade have been exploring littleBits. Soon, my students will begin coding and robotics with SPRK+ and Dash & Dot! My goal is to create a space for my students to not only work with the technology available but to understand how it can be used to solve real world problems. With the Bloxels game board and iPad app, my students can play fun games and channel their creative potential as they gain greater understanding of important topics like design logic, and computer science and demonstrate their knowledge of history, science and mathematics and more through the games they create. My students will collaborate using the Bloxels game board and app to create the characters, the background, and the story for their games. One example game that our fifth grade could work on goes along with their science standards on plant and animals cells: What if you could make a game out of a plant cell? Students would research the different elements of a plant or animal cell and then build a game that lets you explore all the components in detail. How will the hero find his way to the nucleus and will he have to fight off the chloroplast or collect them? You decide!
