I have been teaching at an urban school in New York for about 3 years. My students face many obstacles at home and the community that prevent them from learning how to read. Many of my students’ parents are illiterate. They do not get the literacy support in the home. The neighborhood where the school is located is poor and plagued by crime and violence. The school lacks funds due to harsh economic times. The school is unable to provide the bare necessities such as books.
