Students will be gain an incredible hands on experience by dissecting a sheep's heart. This is an experience that they will remember. They will have learned all about the heart, so to have the opportunity to dissect a "real" heart and see first hand what they have been learning about will be incredible. These students have never had the opportunity to dissect before and giving them this opportunity will increase their desire to go forward in science. Dissection is a way to ignite a love of learning and increase confidence. I have seen first hand students who seem to not care about school change their attitudes. The excitement they have during a dissection is carried on throughout the year and that confidence gained is apparent in other subjects. The science books will be a great resource for increasing student literacy. Most of the students at my school are below reading level. Giving them the opportunity to read science content at an at level reading level will increase literacy skills.
