We strive to prepare our learners for college and career readiness. This includes being technologically literate and having the skills to work collaboratively. This is not what the traditional schoolhouse arrangement of rows and aisles was designed for. I want to create a student-centered space where kids feel empowered through active participation and decision-making. In our room we're transitioning to flexible seating arrangements and a fluid room, and there is a clear increase student collaboration and engagement. We have just started to see the power of the digital classroom with sites like Google Classroom and Socrative, but we're kept from reaping the full benefits due to several factors. Our aging netbooks have such poor battery life that the kids must return to the charging station in the back of the room several times a day, which severely impacts their work flow. With cord concealers throughout the room chargers can be secured without creating a safety issue. Our table space is limited by the number of workbooks, textbooks and regular supplies needed for daily work. Seat pockets will keep the table and floor space free while keeping necessary materials close at hand. Finally, as the instructor I need to be moving around the room, not tethered to a teacher station in the front. This becomes very difficult when running digital lessons, editing work on Google or using sites like Class Dojo. A tablet Chromebook will help promote a fluid, versatile environment to maximize the use of our classroom space. Your donation will help our kids utilize the full potential of their resources and develop a the skills for academic success in a digital world.
