My district is working on adopting the Next Generation Science Standards. We are a K-8 district and grades 6-8 are now using these new standards. Right now our science learning is text only with no hands-on activities. With the Next Gen Standards, this will all change. Student engagement during science text learning is very low because it is not fun or exciting. I would like to start implementing these new standards now to get kids excited about science. Robots are very high interest and will get kids excited about coding. Snap Circuits will allow students to safely build circuits to power anything the can imagine, and buy purchasing the "Green" kit students will learn about renewable versus nonrenewable resources. Buy purchasing 12 Snap Circuit kits, my kids can work in small groups to really understand the flow of energy and have peer support and encouragement while doing it. Each specialized kit will also teach the students about a different aspect of the flow of energy. The Sphero Robot will teach students how to code and thus learn about transferring information via waves and technology. My students will also be able to have visual aides and real life experiences with the Rock and mineral collections and fossils. My students will love the hands on experiences when learning about anatomy of the eye and how light passes through the eye. Technology in science is where our next generation is going and all of these items will help my classroom get just that!
