Our busy classroom is packed full of writing tools, books, and science kits, but we have just enough room to create a little calm-down corner. My six- and seven-year old students bring stress with them into the classroom due to family changes, financial insecurity, or traumatic experiences. As part of our social-emotional learning, I would like to create a mindfulness corner in our classroom. When students are anxious, depressed or having trouble regulating their emotions, it is hard for them to learn. In our mini "zen zone," we will have a place where students may take a short break and use sensory experiences to self-regulate their emotions. The white noise machine with adjustable-volume headphones will provide a soothing listening experience. The coloring pages and scented markers will give the little ones something beautiful on which to focus, while engaging their sense of smell, sight, and fine motor skills. The kinetic sand (and plastic tray to contain it) provide a tactile experience. The liquid motion bubblers act as calming devices, while also serving as timers for using our special space. Finally, we will save their drawings, as well as positive messages, in a binder that stays at our calm-down area, using the pack of sheet protectors. Overall, this peace corner will help my most vulnerable students learn more by calming their minds and bodies, and missing less class time.
