Technology and art are fundamental tools and methods for 21st century learning that are not sufficiently addressed and funded in education. Chromebooks are essential in the classroom to access the digital world needed to harness learning opportunities in all subject areas. Google Applications for Education, for example, is just one of the many web-based tools that helps students master literacy standards like reading, speaking, listening, research, language development and writing. There are also so many dynamic web sites that develop mathematical skills and concepts in the areas of number sense and operations, geometry and algebra and measurement and data. The learning possibilities are endless. For example, one can learn to code while creating your own games and animations! When we engage in digital technology, we engage in a global, on-line community with endless resources and information to learn and grow. I plan to implement an integrated art curriculum that utilizes parent volunteers corp. All art lessons will be thoughtfully integrated into all other content areas. For example, our language arts curriculum focuses on cultures around the world. When we "travel" to India, we will create rangoli (colorful chalk drawings) and study color theory. At our school we have a kiln, but no clay with which to create sculpture. With these art supplies, my students will engage in hands-on, creative project based learning. There is a fundamental understanding that the time to create in the fine arts with on-line art applications, leads to higher level thinking skills and the use of broad spectrum imagination. Technology and art easily integrate with all grade-level subject matter. Thinking creatively and critically, on-line and off is equally important. Hopefully, DonorsChoose.org will support my project and give my class the supplies needed to implement my education goals.
