I teach in a semi-rural farming community in the central valley of California with a great range of diversity. The two high schools (one of which I teach at) in the district serve many migrant families and others who do not have consistent access to stable education. For many students, education is not seen as a means to an end, but as a requirement that must be fulfilled before doing what they really want to do in life. The students themselves are exuberant and anxious. They want to learn and find their place in the world, but they don’t want to show this yearning for something more to their friends and seem “un-cool.” Last year, a student told me that he just finished the first book he had ever read on his own. Another student overheard him and started to make fun of him for actually reading. Reading has a social stigma that I want to reverse. They have a thirst for knowledge and a lack of resources to quench it.
