This is a brand new Autistic Support class at our high school. Most of these students are transferring from the middle school and thus have never been in a high school classroom. When they come into their classroom for the very first time, I want them to feel welcome and included in this new class. These students will be spending the majority of their day in this class and therefore will benefit from visual and physical supports in the classroom. Creating a warm and inviting environment is a great way to help students to feel safe and open to learning. Students will have a reading area in the classroom with a carpet showing the image of a world map. Not only will they be able to sit on the floor to read, but they will also be able to use the rug map for geography games and map study. Along with the carpet there will be two bean bag chairs. This gives students an additional choice of where to sit that is fun, relaxing, and moves the body differently. My students will begin the school year online and will be participating in Zoom meetings and online curriculum. A reliable pair of headphones will be a great way for them to participate in their lessons from home. When they return to school, they will continue using the headphones in the classroom for curriculum and assessments. These needed additions; the rug, the bean bag chairs, and headphones are a wonderful way to encourage learning and making students feel comfortable and safe in their new school and class.
