Research shows that speaking and listening are important for 21st century skills. A strong vocabulary is one of the most reliable indicators of academic success--it is also one of the areas of greatest disparity between my high and low income students. "Turn and Talk" is a powerful strategy that I am using to develop this skill in my students. With this carpet each student will have their own spot to enable this to occur whenever we gather as a community. This carpet will create a gathering space for my 2nd graders to learn together as a community. In addition, this carpet will give my students a comfortable place to work during our reading and writing independent learning time.
