When my students think of people that are successful, many people they would consider "successful" do not look, act, or talk like them. I want to supply my classroom with culturally relevant books such as The Underground Railroad, Fahrenheit 451, and Go Tell It on the Mountain and lessons so that my students can identify their own stories, struggles, and life in the literature they are reading and the topics they are learning about. I want to empower them to know that their culture and community is important and that they play an important role in our community, our city, and our world. I hope to incorporate culturally competent literature* into lessons that surface the layers and parts of students' lives often overpowered by a common classroom curriculum. I want to create a space where students can analyze and name the details of their own lives as well as identify commonalities in the struggles of the lives of others. All of this in hopes of creating a classroom community and culture that cultivates respect and high expectations for each other as well as a desire to positively influence our community and world by weaving our stories together. In the words of Lauryn Hill, "In these days of tension, tumult, and transition, an exchange of this kind can yield direction, expression, understanding and empowerment as well as connection, self-love, and appreciation that hopefully overflows into our respective communities."
