I watch our students struggle with reading more than a few bullet points. They don't exercise their "reading muscles" enough and I decided that we would incorporate YA novels into my social studies curriculum. The books have been chosen specifically for my kids to apply what we're learning. All children should find that amazing book they disappear into. Many simply don't have the chance - or the books - to do so. I can't afford to give them ALL their own copies, but at least (maybe?) we can work together to give them a copy and quiet place to read.
