I teach in a very low income, high minority section of the city. My students are about 60% Africa American, 35% Latino, and 5% Asia Pacific Islander, who for the most part lack the parental support and encouragement that is necessary for academic success. Out of the 135 9th grade students I taught last year, 1 student had a reading level of higher than a 9th grade level, the rest of the reading levels range from 2nd to 6th grade. Our school, Leadership Prep High School, is extremely underfunded and does not provide any resources or school supplies to the students, and most of their parents lack the financial resources or motivation to provide school supplies to their children. In spite of all of these setbacks, most of my students really want to improve their living situation and do better than their parents have, so they are very open to teachers who care about them and really want to assist them in improving their academic skills for success in college.
