All students deserve to see themselves in the books they read. As our school community continues to diversify, it is important that students have access to books that reflect them. Books should serve as both a window and a mirror for students into the real world. These books will allow our students to see themselves in the characters they love, allowing all students to make real world connections with the characters in the books they read each day. It is important that students have engaging books that expand their imaginations. These books will give students a wide variety of stories, featuring characters with differences beyond their race and ethnicities. Diverse books enrich the classroom library and show students that despite their differences, they all share common feelings and aspirations. A diverse classroom library teaches our students to be inclusive and accepting of others that are different than them. These books will allow our school community to continue fostering a truly inclusive school community.
