The community I live and work is in New Mexico and is surrounded on 3 sides by Indian Reservations. Most of my students come from single parent, economically disadvantaged homes. I work with middle school students who have been expelled from school. The students are in my class 3 hours a day 4 days a week. Students are given the opportunity to continue their work in Math and Language Arts/English and not fall behind in their education. Students stay with me from 9 weeks to a full school year depending of the expulsion offense and if their regular school is willing to take them back earlier than the 365 days they were expelled. The main goal of this program is to keep kids in school where they can continue to learn and off the streets where they might get in trouble with law enforcement.
