When students don't have to worry about their spot during instruction they can concentrate more on the directions given while modeling for independent practice. By giving each child a specific place to sit, they will be more productive during guided and independent practice. Our carpet floor was recently replaced with tile, which is much brighter and cleaner; however, it is not as easy for children to move around easily and find their place during group work and instruction. My instruction throughout the day is based on movement and therefore allows for children to move as they are comfortable. Allowing children to move from their tables to the carpet gives them a chance to kinesthetically stretch from one activity to another.
