This school year my 2nd grade classroom looks more like a coffee shop for kids and less like a classroom. When I go to a coffee shop, I usually gravitate towards the comfy seating choices like the couches and big chairs, and yet, I see people choose the tables and chairs. People have different preferences and make choices depending on their mood or project. Coffee houses let people chose a spot and allow people to get up and move when needed. This is the environment I am creating in my classroom - making responsible seating choices that allow my students to be more engaged. By having alternative seating in the classroom students are free to make a choice of which seating arrangement is best for their learning - standing, laying down, moving, sitting on the floor or kneeling. By giving them a choice I am helping them begin to learn how to make appropriate choices to make them more successful in the classroom. This also helping to reduce the amount of behavior problems that happen in the classroom. By having alternative seating students have their own space to spread out and have room to work. Having alternative seating also helps with engagement. By having higher engagement students will be more successful. In order to create this space, I am requesting 3 wobble chairs and 8 wiggle cushions. By giving the more choice it will help empower them to make better choices and become more successful in the classroom. Having choices helps them become 21st Century learners.
