The reasoning behind flexible seating in my classroom is two-fold. It focuses on the need for young children to be able to move and wiggle in order to learn; it also focuses on the fact that in particular, children who have experienced trauma often have a much greater need to move, shift, fidget, and wiggle. I believe in meeting students where they are. Many of my students have experienced trauma. Through various trauma-related trainings, I've learned about the ways trauma may present itself in young children; one of these ways is through excessive movement and difficulty focusing. Furthermore, young children simply need to move. In an early childhood classroom, all children should have the opportunity to sit, stand, lay, kneel, bounce, wiggle, or even wobble! What better way to meet my students where they are than to provide them with the flexibility to choose whichever seating is most comfortable to them? I have chosen chairs and stools that allow students to bounce and wobble; mats for them to sit or kneel; and bean bags to lay and/or be cozy. I will combine these seating options with a variety of table heights to provide the flexibility to empower my students to choose how they are best able to learn.
