My school is known for putting kids first in all ways. During the first week of school, for the first time, my students were able to experience a variety of flexible seating options. Some students chose more traditional desk seating while others chose to sit on pillows at lowered tables, while some stood at raised tables. The most popular seats were a couple of wobble stools that allowed for movement while providing a comfortable seating option. Research has shown that student engagement and learning are enhanced when a student is allowed to move and “fidget” while working. Student choice of seating also builds student responsibility and self-awareness when they work in a happy, comfortable work space. By offering flexible seating choices, students take charge of their learning as they start thinking how they best learn. To achieve this, my students would greatly benefit from having more “moving” seating options including Hokki Stools and Wobble Stools. Through this project, I hope to provide seating opportunities each day for students to use movement in class to maximize their learning experiences!
