Many students aspire to be veterinarians, architects, graphic designers, or accountants. Others would like to stay at home and raise a family, be a bookkeeper, carpenter, or own their own business. Using calculators and rulers is a part of everyday life for most people, and my students need to be proficient with these tools. As a teacher your goal is to prepare your students for the "real world". Calculators and rulers are real world tools that they will need to be able to use and understand. Even when grocery shopping, it is easier to find the discounted price with a calculator. And these days everyone has a calculator at their fingertips.
