Think about a time when you sat in the same chair all day long at work or in school. Were you engaged the entire time? Were you comfortable all day long? Did you get all of your work done without getting distracted? My guess is that at least one of your answers to these questions was "no". I know that I would be uncomfortable if I could not customize my seating at work or at home so how can we expect students to perform to our expectations if they are not comfortable. Flexible seating will allow my students to feel more comfortable in the environment they spend most of their time in. Not only will they be comfortable but they will feel a sense of belonging to our classroom since they have customized options that fit their specific wants and needs. Once their basic needs of belonging are met then my students can be truly engaged in our content and strive to the high expectations I have for them. The flexible seating options I want to provide my students depend on the materials requested. The free standing exercise balls, wobble seats, and stools allow students to remain at their desks but help them to move and engage their brain through learning. The blow up wobble cushions as well as the flexible bands are options for students who enjoy sitting at their desk and chair but need to fidget their body in order to learn. The small cozy dorm chairs, scoop rockers, kneeling mats, and donut pillows will allow my students to sit on the floor and work in comfort. The dry erase clipboards will assist my students in completing work in all of the alternative seating that they choose. Please help my classroom to become comfortable and engaging!!!
