I chose items that I have seen worked for other children that have disabilities to help calm them down when over stimulated. These items give students an outlet to calm down and fidget and release their nerves in ways that is socially acceptable. Children with special needs need to play to be able to learn what is acceptable in society and what is not acceptable in society. These items will allow them to learn those things in a safe environment. The list below shows how sensory items can benefit a person with special needs. Some of the items I am requesting include a plywood carpeted swing and a hammock chair. These items will allow children to work on their balance and gross motor skills. It will also provide them with a place to sit to calm their nerves and relax. I have requested a ball stool for my students that feel like they constantly have to move so they can stay focused but have an alternative seating option that will not disturb the other students. The pea pod and deep pressure vest I have requested will be available for students who have sensory issues and need that pressure feeling to help them stay calm and to relax. The following items are small items to make the classroom more calming and welcoming for children that have sensory processing disorder. FILTERS CLASSROOM MOOD TRANQUIL BLUE (makes the lights not as bright and is visually stimulating) BALL MUDBALL SET OF 3 (fine motor skills and tactile sensory item) MULTI SENSORY ROTATING FIBER OPTIC (visually stimulating)
