The challenges that my students face in the classroom pale in comparison to what they must face outside of school. My school is located in an impoverished, primarily Hispanic and African-American neighborhood. Many of the students at my school must contend with poverty and violence on a regular basis, and most enter high school with literacy and other academic deficits. Fortunately, the administration, teachers and staff at my school are committed to providing an academically rigorous education to attending students, regardless of their context. Energy and compassion are not in short supply at my school, but this does not always mean ready access to all of the materials necessary to help struggling students succeed in high school and beyond. Donations will have a significant impact on closing the achievement gap between my students and their more affluent counterparts.
