- 66% of 18-24 year-olds in Gary do not have a high school diploma or GED. - The median household income in Gary is less than $28,000. - Gary students read in the 30th percentile against the Indiana State average. “Reading is a means of thinking with another person's mind; it forces you to stretch your own.” - Charles Schriber, Jr. My 4th Grade class deserves the opportunity to stretch their minds. My students' love of class novels became apparent while reading the Wayside School series. But nothing could match their enthusiasm for reading Indian in the Cupboard. Imagine providing a student with their first "the book was way better than the movie" experience! The novels I read with my students help to deliver what might seem like common knowledge to their peers in affluent areas. If not through texts, my students may never have learned what an antimacassar is (from Ramona the Brave).
