In order to encourage behaviors and promote routines that will be crucial in the workplace, I have decided to focus on four target behaviors this year. I want my students to be: 1) punctual, 2) presentable, 3) prepared, and most importantly 4) professional. Students with special needs often benefit from tangible rewards for their hard work and good behavior, so students in my class will earn "scholar dollars" when they exhibit any of these four behaviors. The time clock will enable us to not only reward students for being punctual but will also help students practice a routine that they will encounter in any job, and any special educator can tell you how important it is for our students to practice skills before they do them in the "real world." It is my hope that the time clock empowers my students by making them feel more prepared for post-secondary life. My students also need journals and pens so that they can practice being prepared for class. Some of my students are unable to afford these materials and some do not have stability in their home lives, so it is difficult for them to bring materials from home. Therefore, the journals will live in our classroom, and the students will be able to purchase the pens using their hard-earned "scholar dollars." Regardless of whether or not college is the appropriate next step for my students (for some it may be and for some it may not be), all of them will benefit from being able to practice professional skills. With your help, they can feel confident taking their next steps.
