As budding scientists, my students work as collaborative teams daily. Science is a subject that thrives on teamwork. These standing desks will allow them the choice and flexibility to work together in a more inviting way. Recent studies have proven that standing increases student engagement, learning outcomes, and overall health. Notable decreases in off-task behavior have also been reported. As 12 & 13-year-olds, there has never been a more opportune time to encourage healthy habits for life. My students will be so grateful for the chance to get out of their seats and work in teams to research, design, create, communicate, and reflect at their new standing collaborative tables. I chose the simplest, most cost-effective versions of these tables as possible. I plan on purchasing casters from the hardware store with my own money in order for students to move these tables to various locations around the room. Fancy is fabulous, but I'd rather have more tables to meet the needs of as many students as possible.
