Would you want to sit at the same desk for 7 hours per day? Me either! Last year I started my alternative seating quest with carpet squares and watched how many students went from being unable to focus and complete work to feeling comfortable in their own space. Allowing them to choose their work space allowed them to have choice in their learning. The items I have requested will suit the needs of many types of learners and provide comfortable, flexible seating. At home many of my students experience insecurity and uncertainty, so while at school they crave control over their space, security and choice-many times becoming overwhelmed by their peers which leads them to seek out isolated spots in a corner or under a table to focus on their work. I have seen students struggle to work at tables and desks but flourish when encouraged to find their own space on a carpet or use a clipboard to write around the room. I would like to build on these options by having several Big Joe bean chairs and stability balls for them to choose for seating. My goal is to have my students comfortably working and building stamina in a space where they feel in control and safe.
