Since I am going to be a brand new teacher to this group of students at the elementary school level, I have spent my summer trying to come up with ideas for lessons that will not only help ease the transition for my students. I want them to get to know me and to feel safe in my presence as they did with their former teacher. Since I taught at the middle school level for the past four years, I do not have many supplies and/or activities to reach students with cognitive impairments at the elementary school level. I feel like I am starting from scratch again. It is my hope that my students become comfortable having me as their teacher and that they are able to express themselves in a safe and comforting environment day in and day out. In order to help them during this transition, I have come up with a list of engaging activities to work on over the course of the first card marking and beyond. My students need bean bag chairs, supplies to complete sensory activities, language and discussion starter cards, and supplies for other English and basic skills lessons. The supplies requested will help my students learn and become engaged in lessons in a hands on way. Not only will I encourage language and discussion building through the use of the requested picture cards, but I will also promote learning though avenues such as art, movement, songs, technology, small group activities, and more! I am looking forward to a wonderful year and to learning more about the wonderful students placed in my care.
