Our school does not provide funds for lab activities. This experience is important for my students. Most of them have never done an experiment and have never been into a lab. I use this experiment each year to introduce them to chemical reactions and to increase their interest in Chemistry. The hot plates are needed because we have been sharing a kitchen hot plate I purchased from Wal Mart with a class of 25 to 30 students. We do not have many lab supplies which it makes it difficult to complete labs. I want my students to be exposed to the lab and proper lab procedures so that the ones who continue to college are not at a disadvantage when they enroll in science courses.
