Last year I dabbled in a flexible seating environment by purchasing wobble stools. What happened afterwards was amazing! This became the "it" spot to sit. Students were always engaged and it often led to students working collaboratively. They could move on the stool while sitting and get out any energy. What is comforting is I know research backs up the fact that flexible seating improves student engagement, learning, and health. At the end of the year I asked students if they to would like more seating options like the wobble stools and the answer was a resounding, "Yes!". Students gave me suggestions for my next year's group of learners. The children wanted bumpy seats to put on traditional chairs to help them wobble and also be used on the floor with a lowered table. To give more "bouncing and wobble" choices to wiggle while they work we will use kid size yoga balls. I have included "tall" options for students to sit at tall tables so they can dangle their feet. The final, most exciting option is the standing desk for those that don't want to sit at all! Flexible seating gives students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them. This environment allows them to work in partnerships, communicate effectively, move around frequently, and engage in critical thinking more easily. Having many seating options will continue to foster this environment by providing additional choices for students. The ability to move around while sitting will help my students to be more attentive and focused. These various seating options will keep my kids moving throughout the day.
