This library is full of rich literature aimed at connecting, enriching and teaching our 4th graders about themselves, others, their communities and the larger world around us. We find it necessary to explicitly teach our social emotional/race/social justice curriculum with as much preparedness and passion as we teach other core content areas. This year our three classes of 4th grade students will be working hard to become a class family and will create a place where everyone feels safe, respected, loved and needed. This will be especially important this year when everything in the world looks and feels different. In order to achieve this sense of connection to one another and our community, we will be focusing on kindness, understanding, empathy, and action in our own lives and the lives of others. Our use of high-quality literature will serve as a stepping stone to dig into deep discussion with our students and their families. Students in this 4th grade class will truly think about the needs and wants of others. They will do their best to have their actions reflect their kindness and empathy, and they will concentrate on figuring out what to do if something needs to be fixed in their lives, their community and our world.
