Research shows that young students are more actively engaged and on task when given multiple seating options and opportunities to move in the classroom. Today, kindergarteners are expected to learn things that used to be first grade skills. Each year, I watch my students struggle more and more to sit still and to stay on task. With such a strong emphasis on academics, I am careful to make sure students get enough movement with brain breaks and other options to get their wiggles out. Last year, one of my students sat on a "wiggle cushion" to help him to focus. I found that it truly helped him and I began to look into the possibility of alternate seating for the whole class. Your generous donation will help to provide my students with alternate seating options and give them purposeful movement they need to be successful in the classroom. Flexible seating options will give my young students another outlet for their energy and help to keep them on task and actively engaged in learning throughout the school day. These options help students to keep moving and to burn excess energy throughout the day. Giving students choices helps to make them more aware of their learning style. Students will have to choose the option that best helps them to focus and complete their work. These alternate seating options will keep students moving at least every 15-20 minutes, throughout the entire day. It will also give students movement options (wobble stools) when they are required to be seated. This will keep students moving for at least 60 minutes per day.
