Marcus Tullius Cicero once said, "A room without books is like a body without a soul." I am inclined to agree with Mr. Cicero. No matter how many posters I add to my walls, coats of paint to my classroom, or motivational sayings to my door, a Language Arts room without a library full of fascinating books to read is like a body without a soul. My students are required to read 13 points in Accelerated Reading books during a quarter. On top of those 13 points, they are competing with the underclassmen for a reward at the end of the year. Our students are only able to go to the library in short increments of time and, because of this, it makes it hard for them to check out books as soon as they finish the book they are currently reading. Having an Accelerated Reading book is necessary because they are given 10 minutes at the beginning or end of every class to read. My students have been working hard for the entire year, and I already have several who have met their classroom goal and are now trying to read to help with the classroom competition. It is only the second week of school and our eighth grade class has a total of 313.6 Accelerated Reading points and they are adding more to that total every day. They are dedicated, excited about reading, and ready to win this competition. I want to do what I can to help them succeed so that they can reap the reward for their hard work.
