Everyone knows that reading to children helps them learn and grow as readers in their own right. I read to my class every day, but the addition of a reading center to our classroom would provide additional opportunities for them to listen to fluent reading and to practice following the text. Many of my students come from low income homes, where books are scarce, or from monolingual non-English speaking homes, where listening to stories in our learning language isn't possible. A reading center would provide so many benefits to all of my students, but for many, it would be the only chance they have to hear reading beyond what I can do myself.
