I've seen the love of reading become passe' with the majority of my students. "I hate reading," "I don't have the time," and "You don't have books that interest me," are comments I hear frequently. Fortunately, something happened this year that affected the majority of our students: a directive was issued to remove every book that contained profanity or inappropriate content. Well, when the students heard this, they became furious. Suddenly students were gathering at my class library and perusing the titles and grabbing a book to read. Luck would also have it that this coincided with National Book Banned week, which also fueled their desire to read "forbidden" books. I took advantage of this opportunity and assigned the first fifteen minutes of every class day for DEAR (drop everything and read) time. The results have been amazing! Your generous donation will enable my students to read books that are of interest to them. When students have a choice and are not told what to read, they are more apt to read. Students who have just found out that reading is actually not an awful thing to do are now asking me if I have any more books by this author or if I have any books on a specific type of genre or topic. It is my hope that this reading frenzy will continue and that my rebel readers keep on reading because they want to, not because they have to!
