"I can relate personally to the characters in this book because I see myself in them". -Jose I. (9th Grade Stamford Academy student) Hi. I am a reading specialist and I teach high school students in an urban setting. Most of my work is on a one-to-one and small group basis. Over the past year one of the things that I have found to be most lacking in working with my students and in the resources that are available to me, are books and novels that are personally relevant to my students. And because of where my students are coming from and the struggles that they face daily, I have found that the genre of literature that is most appealing to them is urban literature. I have discovered that my students find it easier to identify with the characters in urban literature books because they are more able to see themselves in these stories.
