My students read for about 4 hrs in a school day. Most of the stories the students read are all about wonderful adventure and influential characters who change the world, solve a problem, or show other character traits that many of the should strive for. But many of the books do not relate to the children on a personal level. The characters are predominantly white and in some cases show the hard times that African Americans face as something that was fun or not as bad. This project will help fund a library where kids can read stories about children who look like them, come from their background, and understand their daily struggles. This library will be a place for children to grow and really feel like those things that happen in stories can really happen for them. Your donations will give low-income students access to their history, which is an investment in their future. By providing these books to these students, they can start their foundation in this world on PRIDE for who they are and where they come from! The books in that have been requested are books that have African American characters and/ or touch on issues that African American students face daily. These books and shelves help the students have a place where they can pick a just right book quickly and easily.
