The way we teach math matters. Having a positive environment for kids where they feel like they can actually do math without feeling like they're complete failures matters a lot.Students are often afraid of math. Students learn by "doing". If the classroom lacks the supplies to provide these opportunities then students are missing out on a learning opportunity. Dry erase boards and expo markers will allow students to write create problems for each other and have an exciting hands on way to answer problems. Post-it notes, markers and envelopes will let students create interactive notebooks with math vocabulary, games, illustrations, and graphic organizers. They love Post-it notes for vocabulary terms and hidden definitions. Duct tape helps hold the spine of these notebooks together so they can save them for future reference. Students will open their notebooks and look up the information instead of depending on me to answer their questions. Ink makes it possible for me to print the projects that they design on the computer for math. All of these supplies also allow them to create projects like plans for a house including the area of each room.
It will increase their critical thinking and real life situations making meaningful connections. With the supplies students are free and in charge of their own learning. They take even more ownership and belonging of the math taught to them.
