The paperback set of Carl Hiaasen novels will shape a year long literacy unit focusing on not only Hiaasen as an author, his writing and craft, but also environmental science. The students can use their set during read aloud, independent reads, partner reads, choral reading and more. The class will take pride and responsibility in knowing they have their own personal set for the year. The class can focus on literary elements such as cause and effect, character traits, plot, sequence and more. They can begin to distinguish Hiaasen's craft and find common elements and themes within the four novels. The novels also allow for constant current events and environmental connections. Being in an urban setting, the students can learn more about a world outside of their own. These four novels will open the eyes, minds and hearts of the students all year. They will truly thrive as learners and human beings through studies of these novels. My students deserve the opportunity to learn more about the world outside of theirs and to see how words can truly make a difference in the natural world.
