In an increasingly sedentary world, it is becoming critical to provide students with opportunities to move and engage their bodies in order to fully engage their minds. According to the most recent research students feel more empowered and participate more fully when they can choose seating options that make them feel more comfortable and align with the activities at hand. I am requesting bean bag chairs, standing desks, and stability balls to supplement the traditional chairs and stools already available in my classroom. Because my classroom is an English Language Arts classroom with iPad technology as well as traditional paper books, students need a variety of work spaces for our activities. The standing desks will help accommodate active digital activities, the bean bag chairs will be for discussion-based novel activities, and the stability balls will provide an alternative to traditional seating at tables and desks. These alternative choices will also be a boon to students with learning disabilities - including my many ADHD students - who are physical learners and require movement. Providing flexible seating strategies will allow students to experiment and take ownership over their best learning styles and environments.
