With the help of donors, I would like to purchase a Stream kit to be added to my classroom. This would allow my students to build a freshwater ecosystem indoors and to observe an ecosystem that can be very ill-maintained in our area. The stream kit contains all parts necessary for an indoor stream. The students would set up and maintain this stream ecosystem, monitoring oxygen levels, acidity and water quality levels throughout the school year (this would require the purchase of water quality test kits). The students would also be responsible for maintaining a few species of fish (that I would like to order but are similar to what we would have in regional streams) and plants (that grow in healthy ponds) that would be used for experimentation purposes throughout the department (pond water contains wonderful microbes for students to see when using microscopes for the first time). Students, especially poor minority students, do not understand the concepts of science in the world in which they live in. There is such satisfaction in seeing the students make connections from my classroom to the world outside their windows. Many of my students do not enjoy science—it is another boring class…and they have not been wrong—their previous classes HAVE been boring—mostly due to lack of funding and innovative ideas and projects. I hope that this project would allow my students to enjoy science again, and enjoy working with their hands and learning by doing.
